Racing Media Academy – The Experience

It was an intense week in Newmarket to say the least, but I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone through various different activities. Learning about horse welfare from Gabi Whitfield to getting my first taste of an outside broadcast on the RMA mock race day were my standout moments.

I will never forget my first day seeing OB3 in the mist on a cold day at Kempton. Getting to experience the workflows of an outside broadcast through rigging cameras, commentary and RF links alongside helping to troubleshoot plenty of technical issues during the races was incredible.

I primarily spent my time in the engineering department, as well as cameras and photofinish, learning from so many experienced engineers and operators alike diversified my knowledge and allowed me to take on so much over the past few months I’ve spent with the team.

I particularly enjoyed using equipment I’d never used before. LiveU units, Triax camera links and photofinish software, to name a few. What really made my placement stand out was how quick I was able to start using cameras and RCP units during the races. A lot of trust was put into me, and I’m really glad I took the chance to do so.

Thank you very much to the engineers and camera operators that I worked with across OB3 and OB9. Your patience and support throughout really helped me excel.
